Columns define the atomic pieces of data which we have in the Vault.

As such, they are the fulcrum on which everything else rests.

On the one side, we have Source Tables, coming from Source Systems.

On the other there are Satellites which store the Column Data, Hubs which Index it for us and then Links which give it context.

In common to both sides are the Columns.

By capturing the Columns in full detail, we can:

  1. Create Satellites with the correct Data Types for the incoming columns;
  2. Understand the relationship between a Source Table and it’s Satellites;
  3. Understand the relationship between a Hub and its various Source Tables.
  4. Trace which Source Table supplied the piece of data that we are looking at.
